Pigging Out at El Momo

 

Roslyn is in Detroit, so it is time to unleash the carnivore.  El Momo was my first stop. El Momo has won awards for carnitas, and was featured on Netflix, in the Los Angeles episode of Street Food.  The original home based stand is still there, but they have opened a brick and mortar restaurant in Monterey Park, at 1470 Monterey Pass Rd.  

The restaurant may not be as atmospheric as the original, but has the advantage of in restaurant dining.  At the original the options were to either eat in your car or reheat the tacos after getting them home.

As you can see the menu is basic all pork all the time.  I ordered the Maciza, pork butt, and the Mixto.  As most of you know port butt is actually pork shoulder.  Butt was the name of the wooden barrels used as containers.

Both were juicy and packed with flavor.  Being a traditionalist, my favorite was the pork butt, which is what we call carnitas.  David has carried on, and expanded, the family business started by his father.
